The fall Annual Report Edition 2023-24 of Wooster magazine foreshadows the future of a Wooster education based on strengths in forward thinking, innovative academics, and collaborative inquiry. The annual financial review reports on the College’s operating revenues and expenses and highlights the ways donors have endorsed the Wooster education in the past year. Donors like Xiaorui “Ray” Bao ’11 and Dan Griffis ’94 share what compels them to give back to Wooster students and increase the value of their alma mater. Combined support from individual donors, reunion classes, and Wooster’s Women’s Advisory Board honor key figures from Wooster’s history including Dr. Viola Startzman Robertson ’35, medical director from 1956-79 and Vivian Holliday, dean of faculty from 1977-85, through new gifts to support funds in their names. The report also covers the evolution of the Pathways programs, experiential learning, academic programs, and employee engagement, as well as the latest achievements of athletes, faculty, students, Wooster Preschool, and other College news. Alumni profiles highlight the Distinguished Alumni of 2024: Bob Heatherington ’74 and Jim Maiwurm, among other awardees Reunion Weekend—an annual event that welcomed nearly 700 alumni from the classes of 1959-2019 in June 2024.

In the summer 2024 issue of Wooster magazine students and alumni share what inspired their capstone scholarship at Wooster and where it led them. The Class of 2024 drew from their own interests to design scholarly research and creative expression unique to them; students featured include Athena Tharenos, Levi Gainer, Briana Mosley, Corey Knauf, and Tyara Thompson. For some students, I.S. uncovers a wonder and eagerness to further their study in the area. This issue also shares the stories of alumni who built upon the foundation of their I.S. for ongoing research, professional work, and everyday inspiration including John Trainor ’16, Jennifer Shepheard ’18, Peter Jeffy ’14, and Kyle Cunningham-Rhoads ’12. The Oak Grove section includes coverage of how the campus experienced the total solar eclipse, congratulations and thanks to faculty and staff retiring in the 2023-2024 academic year, the story behind the Reimer Endowed Scholarship established by Don Kohn ’64, “Mentoring Matchup” with Désirée Weber, associate professor and chair of political science and her sophomore research assistant Abhishek Manhas ’26, a double major in mathematics and computer science, and the latest College news and achievements of faculty, staff, and students. Tartan Ties features photos from the Wooster on the Move event series with President Anne McCall, “Scot Volunteer” with Betsy O’Brien Anderson ’94, an author profile with Michael Bernstein ’11 who wrote an article for TIME magazine in April introducing audiences to his book’s topic, the “nocebo effect,” and alumni profiles of Douglas Buchanan ’06 and Kennedy Schultz ’91.

The Wooster magazine spring 2024 issue features alumni who translated campus exploration at The College of Wooster to empowered leadership in their next communities. Whether they are musicians performing as an ensemble, teammates on an athletic field, neighbors in the international house, study partners in the science labs, moot court team members, or otherwise connected, Wooster students find and create community on campus. Constructing these relationships and exploring all the opportunities that contribute to a Wooster education sends forward alumni with strengths that guide them as they serve their next communities around the world. The spring 2024 issue of Wooster magazine tells the stories of alumni who developed leadership, critical thinking, and collaborative skills from their involvements at the College that shaped their future including Lauren Grimanis ’12, Ben Read ’23, Kelly James ’97, Erika (Fischer) Floreska ’93, Margaux Day ’06, Rehmat Ali Hasnie ’91, Eran Maina ’21, and Scott Perkins ’20. Also read about how Kiki Giles study abroad experiences have shaped her views of languages and culture. In addition to College news and achievements of students, faculty, and staff, the Oak Grove section includes “Why Wooster” with Camille Mallett ’13, case manager for student support and outreach and a story about donor support for APEX Fellows that supports students with internship opportunities that guide their next steps in their field of interest. Tartan Ties includes class notes shared by alumni ranging from the Class of ’67 to ’19, including nearly two dozen photos, and new books from alumni authors.

The President’s Annual Report 2022-23 fall edition of Wooster magazine highlights the many ways The College of Wooster Community has supported the College mission in the past year and offers a look ahead at what’s next at Wooster. The annual financial report details College operating revenues and expenses and the year’s giving and fundraising activity. Donors who found ways to support programs and priorities at Wooster in the past year that enhance student experiences and the College community are featured, including gifts supporting scholarships and student success, sustainability, and library services. The issue also highlights the 30th Anniversary of the AMRE program, Alumni Weekend 2023, Distinguished Alumni, and reviews several key accolades and events from the past year. Alumni from the Class of 2023 share their next steps after graduation and how their Wooster experiences prepared them for their new careers and graduate programs. Looking at the future of the College, the coverage of the Inauguration of President Anne McCall highlights the Inaugural address and panelists from Wooster faculty and alumni as well as guests from other academic institutions who participated in a liberal arts series of open dialogues in honor of the Inauguration.

Wooster magazine’s summer 2023 issue illustrates how off-campus study, courses, internships, and I.S. research expand students’ comprehension, perspective, and aptitude. The cover feature highlights an off-campus TREK program taking students from a course in the Rhetoric of Black Civil Rights to Alabama. Independent Study features include Katie Spence, Ryan Johnston, Hope Carmody, and Ferdawss Ihiri. More stories about experiential learning in action include a chemistry lab incorporating the study of art conservation, a Data Visualization course where students prepared visuals for a real client, and practical experiences in speech, language, and audiology careers. Oak Grove covers Commencement for the Class of ’23 with speaker Kurt Russell ’94, 2022 National Teacher of the Year, and includes a conversation about trends in study abroad with Candace Chenoweth, director of off-campus study and an Office Hours featurette with Christina Welsch, associate professor of the history of Britain and its empire. In addition to class notes, Tartan Ties features an author profile with Sheila Liming ’05, whose book, Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time, was highlighted in The New York Times. Sandeep Bhatia ’89, president of the Alumni Board, also shares what volunteering with Wooster means to him.

The spring 2023 issue of Wooster magazine features alumni influencing change in their communities around the world, including John Carwile ’81, career member of the U.S. Foreign Service; Rashmi Ekka ’08, international development consultant; Samira El-Adawy ’13, Special Olympics youth manager in the Middle East and North Africa; Ishtiaq Ghafoor ’00, a diplomat with the British Foreign Service; Sarah Haile ’03, a biostatistician at University of Zurich; Kurt Russell ’94, 2022 National Teacher of the Year; and Lauren Vargo ’13, climate change researcher in New Zealand. Also featured are students who have attended the annual Athens Democracy Forum for the past five years and recent international graduates taking advantage of opportunities to gain experience in STEM fields. The summer 2022 issue of Wooster magazine celebrates the return of the Senior Research Symposium, highlighting seniors whose Independent Study research propelled them toward their next steps in their careers and graduate work. It also features research in climate anxiety by Susan Clayton, professor of psychology, that is drawing international attention. More than 30 years of students participated in a physics experiment with a pile of beads that has real-world applications in to avalanches, landslides, and even traffic patterns. The feature details how it works, alumni who participated, and how students and Professor Susan Lehman plan to uncover new data. The legacy of President Sarah R. Bolton in her six years at The College of Wooster is also showcased. College and alumni news covers Wooster’s 152nd Commencement ceremony featuring keynote by Oscar-nominated alumnus Darius Scott Dixson ’13, known as "DIXSON" professionally, and reflections from the Class of 2020 who celebrated their graduation in person at last in May 2022.

While founded on principles of equity and inclusion, throughout history reality has not always met these ideals and the work to ensure that every individual thrives on the Wooster campus, free from bias, harassment, and discrimination remains ongoing. This issue of the magazine outlines Black history and some of the student activism that has driven needed change at the College. It also features the stories of some of the many Wooster alumni who have gone on to make powerful change for justice in the world including LeRoy Reese ’88, Ayesha Bell Hardaway ’97, Joy E. Bronson ’07, and Samuel Kitara ’14. Oak Grove highlights some new Wooster faculty and staff and how they are settling in at the College. The summer 2021 issue of Wooster magazine highlights the ways Wooster students and alumni responded to a year of change and constant adaptation. Throughout the year, seniors constantly adapted as research, communicating, and learning changed due to the pandemic, and yet the Class of 2021 still experienced the hallmarks of The College of Wooster Independent Study program: mentored research, interdisciplinary and critical thinking, and establishing tools for future achievement. Students who drew inspiration from events that impacted them like the Black Lives Matter movement, online learning, or untapped areas of research they explored in compelling ways. Also in this issue, alumni from the Class of 2020 share how they navigated a year as new college graduates through quarantine, a changing job market, and upended plans. Also featured is alumnus Jim Deprez ’02 and his experience as the 2021 (and now 2022) Iditarod Teacher on the Trail, an honor that gives one teacher in the United States the chance to travel the legendary Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race and send news updates to classrooms around the country. Also find coverage of Commencement 2021, a send-off that brought together graduates, families, and the Wooster community for an in-person event they’d longed for all year, as well as the latest College news and achievements of faculty, staff, and students.

The spring issue of Wooster magazine showcases The College of Wooster’s new Pathways Programs which bring together interdisciplinary courses, experiential learning, and ongoing reflection for current students. Alumni working in the areas of Public Health, Global Impacts, Museum & Archival Studies, Entrepreneurship, Activism & Social Change, Digital & Visual Storytelling, and Data Exploration & Communication comment on how they have applied their liberal arts education in today’s world. The issue also features an update and renderings of the planned renovation and expansion of the student center. Oak Grove includes an update on diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings taking place College-wide as well as Mentoring Matchup with Andy Zidron, head men’s soccer coach and Andreas Xenofontos ’21 and Why Wooster with Hamed Goharipour, assistant professor of Urban Studies. This fall 2020 issue of Wooster magazine acts as the President’s Annual Report showcasing how undeterred by challenges of pandemic, College of Wooster faculty and staff came together to ensure innovative learning experiences and a strong engaging community endured for students. In addition to the annual financial summary and giving report, the magazine features stories that reflect on the 2019-20 academic year including new learning opportunities for students and innovative academic experiences that open students’ eyes to new perspectives. Featured student stories included Dhwani Parsana ’21 who completed research for her Independent Study with Laura Sirot, associate professor of biology, and APEX Fellows Alexandra Manopoulou ’22, Hasan Malik ’22, and Laura Haley ’21. The renovation of upper-class residence halls and shared community spaces dedicated to the Black Student Association, the LGBTQIA+ community are also included. Through a story on her mentoring relationship with Professor Jennifer Ison, Miyauna Incarnato ’21 shares her excitement for biology research. Faculty from multiple disciplines discuss two virtual courses created for incoming Wooster students. Also read about new tenure track faculty Álvaro Corral, assistant professor of political science and Carlo Moreno, assistant professor of environmental studies. Finally hear from Jennifer Faust, assistant professor of chemistry, about an advanced mass spectrometer that added to the research and learning opportunities for students and faculty, and from alumni of the Class of 2020 about where they are now. In addition to alumni achievements and awards, the Tartan Ties section shares perspectives from alumni about how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their them, their work, and their industries.

They share some of their big questions, strategies employed, and discoveries from their intensive research projects. Isaac Weiss ’20 and Kevin Weiss ’89, both mentored by John Ramsay, professor of mathematics, recount their experiences with I.S. and what they learned. Retiring faculty and staff share their reflections as they bid farewell with fondness for students and the Wooster experience. Members of the Class of 1970 offer their memories from 50 years before when their senior spring semester was disrupted by civil unrest, the draft, assassinations, the war in Vietnam, and the deadly student rally at Kent State University. Oak Grove includes Office Hours with Amber Larson, director of The Learning Center, and Tartan Ties welcomes Wooster’s newest alumni with pictures of the Class of 2020 from their four years at the College.

The fall 2018 issue of Wooster magazine highlights the success of the Wooster’s Promise campaign including the completion of the Ruth W. Williams Hall of Life Science with comments from Dean Fraga, Danforth Professor of Biology and Mark Snider, Robert E. Wilson Professor of Chemistry, who served as “shepherds” for the project. Each of the campaign priorities are explored including financial aid, featuring students Kiera Parker-Emerson ’19 and Brendon McBride ’20, and academic strength featuring Erzsébet Regan, Whitmore Williams Assistant Professor of Biology, and Daniel Bourne, Flo Kurtz Gault Endowed Chair of English. Under the priority of experiential learning, an article about the Health Coach Program at the College features Dr. Paul Nielson ’95 and student Scott Perkins ’20. Latrice Burks is highlighted as a donor to The Wooster Fund. Other donors featured in the campaign section include Doon ’80 and John Foster, Doug Brush ’77, William McAfee ’32, and Don ’64 and Gail Kohn. In a separate feature three students, Kate Longo ’18, Allison Secard ’19, and Jena Styka ’18, share their inspirations for nominating Martha Chase ’50, a biology alumna known for the Hershey-Chase experiment, for recognition in the Timken Science Library. The winter 2018 issue of Wooster magazine examines the different types of data and tools used to answer research questions through the experiences of alumni who curate differnt types of collections. Alumni Kathy Bremar Hollis ’03, John Sime ’09, Erica Clites ’06, and Kristina (Brady) Shannon ’03 share their experiences as curators of scientific collections. Similarly, Wooster biology professors Rick Lehtinen and Jennifer Ison talk about the biological collections on campus. Also featured is alumna Connie Schulz ’64 and her use of digitization to improve our understanding of the past and its people through the digital publication of The Papers of Eliza Lucas Pinckney and Harriott Pinckney Horry with the University of Virginia Press. Wooster English Professor Jennifer Hayward explains how her students are using similar digital curation techniques to study British Chilean Newspapers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also featured is Professor Olivia Navarro-Farr as co-principal investigator for the U.S.-Guatemalan El Perú-Waka’ Archaeological Project.

The fall 2017 issue of the Wooster magazine examines the internship opportunities provided by APEX and Fulbright fellowships. Jesse Garrett-Larson, Jordan Griffith, Arabella Goodrich, Justin Warner, and Meonyez Goodwin engaged in internship opportunities provided by APEX. A section highlights Morgan Hughes, who had a Fulbright fellowship as an English teaching assistant in Malaysia. This issue also profiles four alumni journalists on truth-telling. The alumni journalists profiled are Rick Dayton ’89 (news anchor), Sarah Fenske ’99 (editor-in-chief), Stephanie Stapleton ’89 (senior editor), and Mike Householder ’95 (video-first journalist). In another feature, Morgan Hughes ’15, a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Malaysia, shared her experience. This issue also profiled Tom Hilt ’72, who details his experience returning to Kauke as a class auditor.

The spring 2017 issue of the Wooster magazine is editor Karol Crosbie’s last edition. It profiles of 10 of the 438 I.S. projects created that year: Catherine Boyles, Tali Westreich, Jason Solinsky, Robin Morillo, Foster Cheng, Nate Huwar, Bethany Smith, Tyler Bostdorff, Tashiyanah Hutchins, and Lucas Skogland. This issue also celebrates the launch of Wooster’s Promise, a new fundraising campaign to enhance financial aid, The Wooster Fund, academic strength, experiential education and the life sciences. There is a special section for Herb Stetzenmeyer ’69, a member of the original Wooster Pella team, a multidisciplinary group of Wooster students that conducted a full-scale excavation of Pella, one of the most important archaeological sites in Jordan. Stetzenmeyer returned to the site 50 years after the Wooster trip.

The Winter 2017 issue of the Wooster magazine celebrates the College’s sesquicentennial and the 12th president. Director of Alumni Engagement, Thomas McArthur thanks alumni for continuing the spirit of celebration and engagement. Page 3 remembers the life of Michael “Hutch” Hutchison ‘67. Laurie Priest ‘77 is recognized as a distinguished alumni for her work as the director of athletics at Mount Holyoke College and her mission to combat bullying and homophobia in the athletic world while also promoting equal opportunities for female college athletes. Judy Patterson ‘63 is recognized for her over 30 years of work providing legal counsel to children in juvenile court. T. William Evans ‘60 is also recognized for pioneering facial aesthetic surgery and emergency/acute care medicine. Further more on page 11, the College of Wooster Nursery School celebrates 70 years of service. Lastly, the magazine features two main stories. The first is a history of fashion at the College of Wooster and the second is a story about Navajo mothers and daughters.

The fall 2016 issue of the Wooster magazine features a section dedicated to Sarah Bolton, the College of Wooster’s 12th President, the renovations to the Cornerstone Playlab, and voices from the past, a creative endeavor with portraits by Mattie Cannon ’14 of John H.
