Abstract

Cette thèse vise à examiner les techniques courantes de la traduction littéraire et leur application pratique dans les contextes du thème et de la version. Le chapitre méthodologique explique d’abord les concepts qui sous-tendent les cinq techniques principales que j’ai utilisées pendant mon travail : les unités de traduction, la modulation, la transposition, l’équivalence, et l’adaptation. Chaque partie de ce chapitre comprend des exemples concrets tirés de mes traductions afin de démontrer comment et pourquoi un traducteur choisirait de profiter de ces procédés dans certains contextes. Pour la version, j’ai traduit une vingtaine de pages de Seule en sa Demeure, un roman publié en 2021 par l’écrivaine française Cécile Coulon. Le texte de départ se trouve côte à côte avec ma traduction pour que des lecteurs puissent facilement comparer des phrases dans les deux langues. Le thème prend cette même forme pour présenter ma traduction du court récit « drownings » du recueil de nouvelles What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours, publié en 2015 par l'écrivaine britannique Helen Oyeyemi. J’ai choisi ces deux œuvres non seulement pour leurs intrigues captivantes mais aussi parce que ces deux auteures ont des styles d’écriture extraordinairement uniques, présentant des défis distincts au traducteur.

This thesis seeks to examine the prevalent techniques of literary translation and their practical application in the context of thème (English to French translation) and version (French to English translation). The methodological chapter first explains the underlying concepts behind each of the five primary techniques that I used throughout my work: translation units, modulation, transposition, equivalence, and adaptation. Each section of this chapter includes specific examples from my translations in order to demonstrate how and why the translator would choose to make use of these techniques in certain contexts. For the version, I translated around twenty pages of Seule en sa Demeure, a novel published in 2021 by French author Cécile Coulon. The source text is placed side by side with my translation so that readers can easily compare sentences in both languages. The thème takes on the same format to display my translation of the short story “drownings,” taken from the short story collection What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours, published in 2015 by British author Helen Oyeyemi. I chose these two works not only for their captivating plots but also because these two authors both have incredibly unique writing styles, presenting distinctive challenges to the translator
