Abstract

Investors are acquiring large tracks of land for biofuel transactions, oil, palm and rubber plantation, and food production for the export market. Developing countries are targets for investments motivated by low production cost, availability of water and land coupled with favorable climatic conditions to produce the preferred crops of the investors. The purpose of this study is to examine how large-scale land acquisitions affect the livelihoods of rural farmers in Ghana. This paper uses three theory models, the Household consumption model, Household production model and the land rent theory to explain how large-scale land acquisitions affects rural farmers in Ghana. My hypothesis is that a large-scale land acquisition will decrease the livelihoods of farmers in rural areas of Ghana. To test this, I use the OLS method of regression to explore how large-scale land acquisitions affect the food expenditure of rural farmers in two regions of Ghana.
