Abstract

During my research I have come across two terms - the public self and the private self - that relate directly to my project. The public self is what we present to others based on how we want them to perceive us, and the private self is essentially who we truly are: what we keep to ourselves (160.) However, as humans, we cannot do a particularly perfect job of concealing everything we want to conceal, nor can we always be successful at presenting to others something we are not or how we wish to be seen. This constant head butting between the public and private selves turns into something referred to as the "transparent self." This academic year, I have been attempting to translate this theory into a series of paintings by expanding and developing the public and private self.
