Abstract

This study seeks to examine the potential effects of ownership change within the English Premier League (EPL), which is currently the most globalized, profitable, competitive, and engrossing league in world football. Two different variations of pooled Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models were observed in order to measure the effects and significance of ownership change against the financial and on-field performance indicators. The dependent variables utilized for this experiment were year-end revenue and total league points earned, which were also lagged for 1-year and 3-year observed delays. Results suggest that ownership change has an insignificant impact on year-end revenue, but that ownership classifications of foreign and billionaire status were statistically significant determinants. Moreover, ownership change insignificantly impacts total points for the immediate and 1-year delayed models, yet is statistically significant in the 3-year delay. Conclusions can be drawn that ownership change displayed a relatively minimal impact on overall club performance during the studying period but could be expanded on and improved to more accurately assess the peculiar nature of EPL firms and their ownership.
