Abstract

As the media continues to grow in the power and influence it holds, it is imperative that its themes be interrogated and grappled with. In that same vein, as the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organisation continue to release reviewed and reworked versions of their diagnostic manuals – the DSM and the ICD respectively – their effects on diagnosis and their effectiveness as manuals must also be examined. The present study is thus an exploration of these two different influences in two different worlds that contain more intersections than one may at first suppose. I complete this study by examining portrayals of bipolar disorder specifically in Euphoria and Shameless, while also conducting reviews of the diagnostic criteria of Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 in the DSM and the ICD.
