Abstract
Before the globalizing trend towards urbanization and commercialization of small-scale farms, there existed various self-sustaining communities, isolated from the global market, all around the world and in marginalized landscapes. And the specific knowledge they draw from to sustainably interact with their surroundings is called Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). However, such communities have been losing their TEK as they are increasingly more exposed to external media and their products. The loss is also occurring as the economic drivers of the capitalist countries drive communities from their ancestral lands into urban places. However, as TEK receives more recognition it is seen as a viable choice for small-scale communities to boost their socio-ecological resilience in an environmentally sustainable way. Yet the number of studies done on the subject has been lacking and therefore, it is difficult to measure the effectiveness of the TEK and how exactly they will be utilized. By studying their role in displaced communities, I contribute to the growing field of TEK through their adaptability and effectiveness.
