Abstract

Children are commonly utilized in horror media in a variety of roles, from which conclusions can be drawn about both children as a class of people and horror as a genre. This critical introduction and novella explore the theme of child development through the lens of horror fiction. The introduction analyzes the uses of children in horror and identifies several archetypes of child characters in horror media. The novella centers around a child with an ambiguous role as a horror character, and emphasizes the effects of his upbringing on his psychological and physical development. I utilized my knowledge as an early childhood educator as well as my familiarity with the horror genre to generate this composition.
