Abstract
The main goal of this project is to investigate portions of the Ohio Revised Code on healthcare, education, and civil rights through the lenses of three feminist concepts and a feminist critical discourse analysis. The first chapter of this work focuses on the methods by which the following chapters will proceed and discusses a general theory on the reasoning behind the study of language. The second chapter of this work performs a conceptual analysis of representation, equality, and legitimacy. During the analysis, I will state my position via the work of other political theorists debating said concept, selecting a conception that evidence demonstrates best serves disadvantaged communities, particularly those in gender minorities. The chosen approach to each concept will later be used as a tool for adjudicating the content and implications of the sections of law investigated in the third and fourth chapters. The third and fourth chapters of this work contain a feminist critical discourse analysis of sections of the Ohio Revised Code that will be performed and synthesized with the criteria set out by the conceptual analysis performed in the second chapter. The conclusion of this work will revisit themes revealed in the analysis from chapters three and four. This will include investigating the real-life implications of anti-trans and gender non-conforming legislation and will provide policy prescriptions as a result.
