Abstract
The purpose of my Independent study was to examine the architectural style changes in Arizona homes. I discovered how the pueblo adobe style of the past has now transformed into the contemporary modern style of the present. My study explores how the materials, the purpose, the style, and the construction of homes in Arizona has changed over time. Modern homes today do not depend on materials from the land which is different from the pueblo style, leading one to wonder how this impacts our sense of home and place. The purpose of homes have gone from survival, protection, and for ceremonious celebrations to now being seen as “ machines for living”. The style has developed from large, one hundred roomed houses to smaller four or five roomed ones. In addition, the construction has changed from the developments in machinery, technology, society, and climate change. For my art exhibition I took many photos of the past historical adobe homes in Arizona then recreated them as 3-D prints while also creating them for viewers to experience in a virtual reality setting. My 3D-prints combine materials that are as old as the earth and as new as PLA filament used with 3-D printing technology . Along with this, I made adobe bricks by using a mold designed as the of my house. My hope for my study is to bring a piece of Arizona back to Ohio.
