Abstract
This paper presents a unit plan to teach Ohio State standard concepts about Imperialism according to The Ohio Department of Education’s Learning Standards for Social Studies. This Independent Study seeks to argue that Imperialists interested in colonizing Africa could be categorized into one of three categories: Social-Darwinist, Economic, and “Moralist.” This can be seen in the contrast of humanitarian groups who wanted to establish colonies in regions dominated by the African slave trade, companies like the British Royal Niger Company that sought to profit off exploitative labor, and men like Josiah Strong who believed whites were entitled to African land because of the “lack of civility” of its’ people.
