Abstract
Stereotypes are utilized by candidates to define their opponents–often painting them in a negative light. These stereotypes can be targeted on candidates’ gender, party affiliation, and race. In my study I ask, do gendered stereotypes–based on gender identity, political party, and race or ethnicity–affect campaign strategies? This study will conduct a content analysis using advertisements, debates, and interviews of different candidates. Studying the connections among the three will expand the current understanding of why politicians campaign the way they do. This topic is especially important to consider, as the United States has just entered a post-Roe world. Do politicians play into stereotypes or stray away from them?
