Abstract

This thesis analyses the impact of remittances received by Nepali households and its impact on child schooling. Our analysis distinguishes between the different impact of remittances on girls and boy’s education. We provide a critical analysis of whether a household’s remittance income influences their decision to spend on the education of a child using an instrumental variable approach. We use data collected from 3,912 households from the second round of the Nepal Living Standards Survey (NLSS) 2003-04. After controlling on the household level for child and parental characteristics, we find significant results showing that children from remittance receiving households are more likely to go to school and attend a private educational institution, they are also less likely to be involved in household labor. However, girls are at a disadvantage in all three situations as compared to boys.
