The Self in the Context of Social Media

Abstract

How does one define the self? How does social media impact the self? The self is always changing and is impacted by many factors. Many people believe social media has a detrimental effect on mental health, but do studies support this? My Senior Independent Study focuses on these ideas and questions. I chose to explore the idea of self through the effect posting on social media had on my photography and my idea of self. All the photographs have the same subject matter, nature, I did this because it is a subject everyone can relate to in some way, allowing others to investigate their sense of self, rather than me being the only one able to relate to them.
