Abstract
This IS explores different concepts related to digital image processing, and a technique used in edge detection called the Canny Edge Detection. At the beginning, some applications of edge detection in different fields are presented to give the readers an overview of the purpose of edge detection in image analysis. After that, digital images and their characteristics are discussed. Some important concepts are how a digital image is stored in a computer, as well as the image noises and edges. Before getting to the Canny Edge Detection, an image operation called convolution is explored in detail, since it is the fundamental operation in the Canny Edge Detection. The Canny Edge Detection is then explained step by step, and the performance of the Canny Edge Detection is tested with different combinations of parameters. Finally, another approach to image analysis is presented with the Fourier Transform.
