Abstract
My Independent Study serves as a model that demonstrates how playwriting, specifically using Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed and APTP devising methods, be used to redress histories of sexual violence of the “Comfort Women”. Throughout my process I plan to use APTP method to help me write and devise my play. I will be using theater games to devise with my ensemble. I will be using games from Augusto Boal to help with character development and devising. I will be using Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy when devising; I will not be telling my ensemble what to do or feel in a way I want use to learn from our research and testimonies and let emotions and characterizations stem from that rather than me just inputting my one point of view. My research will fall more with redressing this history and giving a voice to the women and their testimonies by creating a play that tells their stories and brings light to what happened to them. This will be more of a social awareness and justice type approach. My approach to using the methodologies will be to record my workshops and journal about what was achieved, comments that were said or challenges of the day.
