Anaïs and the hidden garden

Abstract

For my Independent Study, I have written a children’s novel that follows the story of an 11-year-old girl named Anaïs. Due to her dad’s new job, she is forced to leave her life on a farm in the country for the city of Wichita, Kansas. There, she is determined to find a way to incorporate her love of nature into her new environment. She discovers a hidden garden in her favorite park and decides to rehabilitate it: a much larger undertaking than she imagined. She surmounts obstacle after obstacle with her best friend, Margot, by her side. My hope with this project is to inspire children living in the city to find ways to connect with nature. Developing an attachment to the natural environment during childhood is essential for the cultivation of ecologically conscious adults. I have chosen to target children living in cities with this novel as it is more difficult to connect with nature when growing up in a built environment. In this book I emphasize the message that though a relationship with nature does not usually automatically form when living in a city it is possible to find ways to cultivate it.

Pour mon Étude Independent, j’ai écrit un roman pour enfant qui suit l’histoire d’une fille d’onze ans qui s’appelle Anaïs. À cause du nouveau emploie de son père, elle doit quitter sa vie sur une ferme à la campagne pour aller vivre dans la ville de Wichita, Kansas. En ville, elle est déterminée de trouver un moyen d’incorporer son admiration pour la nature dans son nouvel environnement. Elle découvre un jardin caché dans son parc favori et elle décide de le rétablir : un projet plus grand qu’elle en avait pensé. Elle vainc obstacle après obstacle avec sa meilleur amie, Margot, à ses côtés. J’espère que ce projet inspirera les enfants qui vivent en ville de trouver des moyens de se connecter avec la nature. Le développement d’un attachement à l’environnement naturel est essentiel à la création des adultes écologiquement conscients. J’ai choisi de m’orienter vers les enfants qui vivent en ville parce que c’est beaucoup plus difficile à connecter avec la nature quand on grandit dans environnement construit. Dans ce livre, je mets l’accent sur le message que, même si un lien avec la nature ne se forme pas automatiquement d’habitude quand on vit en ville, c’est possible de trouver des moyens de la cultiver.
