Abstract

Mathematics is an important tool for scientifically analyzing aspects of our daily lives. I focus my research on that of human population growth and how it will affect our world. I use mathematical models and real population data to analyze human population growth and incorporate factors such as development status, fertility and mortality rates, and age distribution. I first model how population growth affects resource usage by hypothesizing how changes in oil consumption rates in the major consuming countries will affect the long-term usage of oil globally. Lastly I estimate how the changing age distribution within the United States will affect the future of Social Security. I conclude with a summary of my results and stress the importance of using mathematics to gain a better understanding of the world around us.
