Abstract

So, You Want to be a Stage Manager? asks the question: what are the leadership skills necessary for stage managers as they move from undergraduate theatre to graduate and professional theatre? To help answer my question, I used analytical research on leadership and management skills, then compared those findings with my personal experiences in theatre. I also interviewed stage managers and educators who work directly with undergraduate stage managers. I found that many of the skills I was already using were identified by my study and that Wooster is currently producing well prepared stage managers. I hope that in the future educators and stage managers who look at my study will feel more confident that they are headed in the right direction with their training, or if not, that they will be able to better fill in the gaps.
