Abstract

The political response applied in many European countries after the 2008 crisis has been that of austerity measures. These measures are responsible for public sector freezes and reductions, cuts in social expenditure and welfare state reforms. This study examines the impact of austerity measures on gender inequality. My conceptual hypothesis is that austerity undermines women’s progress towards equality in paid work and economic independence. This hypothesis is empirically tested using an OLS regression analysis which examines the gender impacts of austerity on wages and domestic work. The results provide significant evidence to support that the increase in the gender gap in wages and domestic work can be explained by the implementation of austerity measures.
