Abstract
For my Independent Study, I am looking at the impact that the current social and political climate has on the identity of Muslims living in America. Drawing on both theories of Islamophobia and Racialization, and empirical research on these issues, my study examines what it is like to be Muslim in contemporary America. Using semi-structured interviews, I will ask questions that center on how faith shapes identity, the complexities of negotiating a contested identity, and for those respondents who are parents, how they plan to nurture a positive self-image in their children.
