Abstract

Over the years there has been a lot of discussion on the use of tariffs as well as the trade deficit. Currently President Trump is the leading voice for the implementation of tariffs to reduce the trade deficit. The aim of this paper is to examine the effects that tariffs have on the United States. We want to see the distributional effects and the effects on domestic and global prices. We use an OLS regression in order to see the effect that tariffs have on the trade balance for the United States. In addition to other factors that play into the trade balance. Tariffs have many effects that are negative for consumers and firms in the United States, but do reduce the trade deficit.
