Abstract
This study examines representations of Romani people in nineteenth-century British and French literature, specifically in regards to the deaths of central characters related directly to the ‘gypsy’— whether self-proclaimed or labeled by society. Throughout Emily Brontë’s, Wuthering Heights, George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss, Victor Hugo’s 1831 Notre Dame de Paris, and Prosper Mérimée’s novella Carmen the central character connected to the Romani struggles to define their identity and are simultaneously admired and condemned. Because of these dualities, the main characters are expelled from their respective societies by meeting their dramatic deaths. Through an investigation of these characters and their Otherness, this paper explores the factors that complicate their existence and ultimately drive them to their deaths.
