Abstract
This Independent Study looks at the implications of importing ballet to Bhutan. Bhutanese dance and ballet is studied in terms of their culture in order to gain a deeper understanding of the ideals and purposes of the dances. Identity, recognition and duty to promote traditional Bhutanese dances is explored by referencing Herder, Charles Taylor and Du Bois. The last part of the Independent Study contains surveys and interviews that were conducted over the winter of 2017 in Bhutan. It reveals the Bhutanese view on dance, value, and the cultural interaction between ballet and Bhutan.
