Abstract
Through research, data collection, and interviews, a few factors were identified as being influential in how seriously a city pursues ecological sustainability. These criteria included: Level of manufacturing, level of civic participation, level of traditional culture, the form of government (Mayor-council or Council-manager), and the city government’s main motivation for pursuing ecological sustainability (direct concern for the environment, or pursuit of cost savings). The importance of these factors in a city’s pursuit of ecological sustainability was evaluated through the use of two case studies: One on Seattle, Washington, and the other on Kansas City, Missouri.
