Abstract
What drives Chinese foreign policy towards Japan? How accurate is offensive realist theory? The recent rise of the People’s Republic of China has led to increased levels of interest in regards to China’s actions in Asia. The purpose then of this thesis is to test offensive realist theory through the case of the Sino-Japanese dyad. As a most likely case it serves as a great avenue through which to examine the explanatory power of offensive realism. Not only that but by examining Chinese behaviors in this dyad allows both IR scholars and policy makers a clearly view into Chinese actions in both the dyad and the region as a whole.
