Abstract
Problem-based learning is a teaching approach that can be applied to early childhood mathematics education. Open-ended problems and multiple solution strategies are the basis for this method. Educational theorists and three sets of current mathematics education standards lay the groundwork for and support problem-based learning. Also, a variety of scientific studies have proven problem-based learning to be an effective teaching strategy. This thesis also provides several examples for how to implement problem-based learning into an early childhood mathematics classroom.
