Abstract
This paper will analyze the lived experiences of three marginalized groups during war, Black American men, Soviet women, and African men in the French colonies. By examining the works of prior historians on each of these groups, a pattern emerged. In all of these cases governments specifically targeted marginalized groups in recruitment for service. In doing so, these governments made grand promises of economic and social opportunities that did not come to fruition in peace times. This paper will link these cases in a pattern of exploitation and neglect of marginalized groups in modern warfare.
