Abstract

This project seeks to answer the critical question: How can a choreographer/director manipulate time, space, and energy when creating dance made for film and how does this process compare to choreographing for live performance? In the first section of Chapter 1, this paper defines time, space, and energy in a non-film and then film setting. The second section of Chapter 1, “Practitioners’ Perspectives” looks at four different modern dance choreographers and how they use one or more elements of time, space, and energy. Chapter 2 then looks at six dance films examining how each choreographer uses time, space, and energy in relation to the camera. Chapter 3 includes my previous experience with dance film and then turns into a detailed outline of my overall production process for my I.S. film. Finally, my Conclusion is a final reflection of my overall project with a discussion on how I answered my critical question, suggestions for future research, and my next steps moving forward.
