Abstract

The Trevelyan Rocker, invented in 1829, offered scientists of that era an opportunity to study the combination of thermal physics, acoustics, materials science, and mechanics in one complex phenomenon. Despite great advances in these fields since that time, little progress has been made on the study of the Trevelyan Rocker in the last century. This work provides a foundation for the modern study of the Trevelyan Rocker. A review of historical literature highlights what progress has already been made and where further work is needed. A brief discussion of the theory of the rocker is intended to make future advances in the explanation and simulation of the rocker easier to begin. Finally, an initial exploration into the rocker using modern recording and sound analysis tools increases understanding of the phenomenon using a novel method, and highlights areas where future researchers can expand upon this work.
