Abstract

For many collegiate athletes, the four years spent playing the sport they love are among the most formative and memorable of their lives. These experiences are often shaped by the leadership of their coaches, team culture, and relationships with both teammates and coaches. The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership styles used to foster team cohesion within the basketball program at The College of Wooster. The researcher conducted interviews with eight participants who either coached or played for the program, focusing on leadership styles, team cohesion, unity, and interpersonal relationships. The findings revealed that Wooster basketball coaches attribute the program's sustained success to the recruitment of high-character individuals. By prioritizing the recruitment of quality people, the coaching staff has been able to cultivate and maintain a strong, cohesive team culture that has endured for over three decades. This study underscores the critical role of leadership in shaping team dynamics and highlights how intentional recruitment strategies contribute to long-term program stability and success.
