Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the placement of Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Facilities in relation to socio-economic and racial distribution by census block groups within the state of Michigan. The use of ArcGIS was to visually represent the location of TRI Facilities, Percentage of Race in census block groups, Median Household Income, a list of facility names, and a list of chemical names. The addition of instructions is to help navigate the map for users viewing the Dashboard.
Distance from TRI Facilities to centroid points of census block groups was done to help find the correlation values. I found that percent African American populations had a weak-positive correlation for all three distances in miles (>5,5-10,10-50). This was the opposite with the percentage of White populations having weak-negative correlation values. Income had little to no correlation with all three values. Overall, results indicate that the presence of a higher percentage of African American populations within a census block group is a predictor of where TRI Facilities will be located within Michigan.
