Abstract

In this thesis, I examine the impact of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) on promotability and productivity. Due to the current uptake of companies incorporating DEI and belonging policies, many firms have been turning to ERGs to encourage these practices. I seek to understand the way they impact employees in their day-to-day work and what the benefits are in participating in the groups. The theory used in this study includes the human capabilities model or investments in human capital (specifically training and education efforts). This approach is best described as a firm focused on employee success. The identity based and professional development ERG types are statistically significant to the 1 percent level with a 0.183 percent and 0.182 percent increase in the promotability of an employee. Future research could focus on the direct impact on the firm or conduct case studies to of varying ERGs.
