Abstract

This paper aims to examine Spartan and Elean relations during the 5th century BCE to extract lessons that are relevant and useful for understanding modern diplomacy. I investigate the methods that Elis used to maintain its independence and identity throughout the 5th century BCE. In my analytical conclusion, I apply the lessons that I will identify to modern situations to the extent that the lessons allow me. Throughout my paper, I trace the history of Elis and Sparta to extract key lessons that materialized into a fall from grace for Elis. To this end, I use historical reasoning and psychological analysis throughout my paper. Additionally, I often cite, translate, and discuss the ancient historians to ensure I am accurately conveying the historical material. I also supplement my argument with secondary sources that clarify concepts that are not explicitly explained by the ancient historians.
