Abstract

Historical climate-related studies of Northeast Ohio were initiated by George W. White on the glacial geology of Northeast Ohio (1982) and Holmes County (1973). As global climate change continues to influence weather patterns, the need for localized studies becomes increasingly more vital. This study comprehensively explores weather and temperature trends in Northeast Ohio focusing on The College of Wooster Fern Valley Field Station and the factors that contribute to the region’s unique weather dynamics. By delving into historical climate data, in conjunction with recent Fern Valley Field Station data, this study looks to understand the trends of local weather patterns, uncovering anomalies and potential indicators of broader climatic phenomena.

This study delves into the unfiltered Fern Valley Field Station data, statistically correlating it with other reputable regional climate monitoring station. This study aims to establish a framework for future College of Wooster-related study of localized weather and climate trends of Northeast Ohio using the Fern Valley Field Station Data as a foundation. The primary goals of this study were to filter the decade of unprocessed hourly weather data and convert the raw information into usable time scales generating legible Excel graphs. The Fern Valley Field Station data is statistically significant when correlated with NOAA data but not GHCN data. Nonetheless, a positive relationship between the Fern Valley Field Station and GHCN exists, though it is not statistically significant. This indicates that the Fern Valley Field Station serves as an accurate indicator of Holmes County weather averages. Future weather analyses and long-term climate studies in Northeast Ohio should consider Fern Valley as a key data source, but ongoing research and refinements of methodologies will further enhance the accuracy, reliability, and applicability of data collected from the Fern Valley Field Station.
