Abstract
This project seeks to explore the colonial relationship between the French ‘banlieues’ and the French police through the exploration of the history of both. What colonial continuities can be identified as commonalities between the two in contemporary French society today? Additionally, questions surrounding French identity and the legitimacy of Republican universalism come to light. The argument is made that through the intentional practice of colonial policing strategies and colonial era socio-economic policies that residents of French ‘banlieues’ experience, the banlieues function under a colonial dynamic of servitude to the French Republic.
