Abstract
This project examines the visual art and printmaking activity of avant-garde composer John Cage, the roles of indeterminacy and chance operations on his work, and how he constructed intentionally complex processes to carry out his work. In addition to evaluating the methods by which he worked, this research will also discuss the influence of Zen Buddhism on Cage’s work, as well as the intersection of his anarchist political leanings and identity as a queer man in Cold War-era America.
