Abstract
In this Independent Study, I ask what adaptations add to their respective stories and how does an adaptation to stage enhance or change the material? How would the process of creating stage and film adaptations tell the stories differently? This project analyzes different methods of adaptations, both to stage and film. I examined what elements go into creating a successfully adapted show. I looked at both adaptations to stage and then also took a play and adapted it for film. Using what I had learned, I then analyzed six different adaptations to stage–Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, Hex, My Neighbor Totoro, Back to the Future: The Musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and finally Carrie: The Musical. I then discuss my own progress on creating an adaptation of a ten-minute play, This Time by Annie Sheneman, only this adaptation was from stage to film. I discuss my process with auditions, casting, filming, and editing.
