Abstract
This Independent Study aims to connect Leadership Trait Analysis (LTA) to the idea of Continuity versus Change in foreign policy behavior, and how a states’ National Role Conception (NRC) assists LTA in this endeavor. The cases I have employed will be Russian leaders’ Boris Yeltsin, his reaction to NATO Expansion, and Vladimir Putin, and his posture and policies towards Ukraine. Each leader had a unique vision of how Russia should fit in the post-Cold War era. Utilizing works from Hermann, Breuning, Thies, and many other scholars I hope to accurately portray the sway individual leaders have on the states’ NRC and a state’s foreign policy ambition.
