Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how new technologies in sports impact athletic success. Other factors related to athletic success were also investigated, such as motivation and relationships. Social support theory was used to understand the relationships within a sports team. This study was done by sending a survey to athletes at The College of Wooster about their experiences with technology in their sport, their relationships with their teammates and coaches, and their athletic identity. The results revealed that men’s varsity teams saw more of an impact of technology than women’s teams. They also showed that athletes at Wooster generally have very strong relationships with their teammates and coaches. They also reported having a generally strong athletic identity. One major implication is that the information from this study can help athletes understand how to use technology to help them be successful. Another major implication is that coaches can use this study to help them understand what they can do to build positive relationships with their athletes.
