Abstract
My Independent Study focuses on the current State Standards for History in Ohio. The State Standards do not require educators to go in-depth with the Civil Rights Movement. Instead, educators are only required to address the following, “Following World War II, the United States experienced a struggle for racial and gender equality and the extension of civil rights”. My Independent Study consists of five lesson plans that I have constructed utilizing the College of Wooster’s Education Department plan template which includes a more in-depth view of the long civil rights movement. Additionally, I have not only crafted a lesson plan, but I have crafted a written portion to match and work in tandem for assisting in-depth teachings of the civil rights movement over time. My work also reveals my own experience going through a Public High School in Michigan where I was unable to learn about the movement in my American History course.
