Abstract
This body of writing dives into the intricate unique society of Atlanta where the racial wealth disparity is among the largest in the country of any city. Atlanta has been known as the “Gate City of the South”, “A City too Busy to Hate”, and as of recently “The Black Mecca”. My thesis will tell the story of the evolution of Atlanta and how black people climbed the ranks in society to become the dominant leaders of the city today. This thesis will also tell the story of the paradox in Atlanta of how the poor black community is still in the same situation as they were coming out of slavery. Throughout this thesis you will understand systematically how racist and capitalist placed a societal system within the city in which it is difficult for poor black people to climb out of. Through reading this you will essentially understand how money and power can make humans turn a blind eye to people desperately in need.
