Abstract

Fleet assignment is a task that every airline has to carry out in order to avoid an unnecessary loss of revenue resulting from assigning a smaller aircraft than the demand for a flight or assigning a larger aircraft than the demand for a flight. In this thesis paper, we will first introduce the factors that airlines need to take into account when carrying out the fleet assignment task and then set up a basic fleet assignment model that will be extended to incorporate other complexities in airline decision processes. Next, we will introduce the solution technique `Branch and Bound' used for solving integer linear programming models like the fleet assignment model. Finally, we test the applicability of the formulated fleet assignment model using data from Delta Airlines.
