Abstract
My IS examined sensationalist coverage of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 in the press and popular media. Through examining coverage of the fire in primary sources, and comparing that coverage to another urban disaster in 19th century Chicago, I determined that sensationalist coverage of the Fire demonstrated concern with the role of class and ethnicity in the city.
