Christianity and Ecology: Ideas for the Construction of an Environmental Ethic

Abstract

This thesis contains many concepts and ideas on environmental ethics that have been developed within a religious context. The concepts and ideas have been compiled in such a way that they may offer a guideline for producing a theological environmental ethic. Present attitudes and values towards the environment are examined in order to find the problematic aspects that exist in them so that we may better understand what needs to be revised in order that we may work towards creating a healthier environment. Many suggestions are derived from Christian doctrine and thought and are presented in the hope that these environmentally detrimental elements of our values and attitudes can be changed so that they may prove to be conducive to the development of an environmental ethic. The Christian thoughts and ideas offered for the creation of the ethic are derived from Biblical, philosophical and scientific sources. Literary resources are also offered for those interested in creating an ethic. This thesis finds Christianity to be a substantial foundation for an environmental ethic. It provides a guideline for an environmental ethic as well as a much needed motivating force that is lacking in today's society. To ensure a healthier planet, Christianity should be used to form an environmental ethic.
