Abstract

This study investigates the impacts of the shifts in government spending between the years 1980 and 1985 on cities. Employment impacts on the nation's SMSA's is the particular focus of the study. The results of this study indicate that the nations cities suffered unemploment effects due to cuts in grants. Some employment gains were made due to increases in Procurement contracting and Federal employee salaries and wages but the impactsappear to have been mixed with some sectors gaining in employment and others losing employees.
