Abstract

This is a study about the DEFA Indianerfilme, which are East German Westerns. In my first chapter I establish how the Western genre and Native American representation has been a longstanding tradition in German culture. In my second chapter I discuss how film is an integral part of German culture and has been used to shape popular sentiment and portray profound emotions. In my final chapter I discuss several East German Indianefilme, which are revisionist Westerns used to inform an East German communist society.
