Is This A SET?: The Relationship Between Creative Thinking and Playing A Visual Perception Card Game

Abstract

Creativity is a trait that involves divergent thinking, the association of unrelated stimuli, problem solving, pattern recognition, and high cognitive functioning. Research suggests that these traits can be trained and creativity can be enhanced. Studies thus far have used training mechanisms such as seminars and computer programs, but little research has focused on the use of games and play as an effective method for enhancing creativity. The current study explores the relationship between playing SET, a visual perception card game, and creativity. Overall, there was no significant difference between low creative and high creative participants or training condition, but the number of SET matches significantly increased between Day 1 play and Day 3 play. Repeated exposure to a demanding cognitive task improves performance.
