Abstract

The purpose of this study will focus on several aspects of the role of the press in the United States. Various theories concerning the function and responsibility of the press will be analyzed to set the foundation for an analysis of the relationship of the press to the government. The basic theory of this study maintains that this relationship has shifted over the past thirty years, from one of press subordination to press independence. This theory will be tested through an analysis and comparison of the New York Times coverage of the 1965 Watts riots and the 1992 L.A. uprisings.
