A major in Chinese Studies provides students not only with an introduction to reading, writing, speaking and listening to Chinese, but also with an insight into Chinese culture, non-Western conceptual schemes and modes of thought. As well as language, the Chinese Studies program focuses on Chinese history, religion, literature and film in course taught through English.

Recent IS topics include examinations of the experiences of Chinese illegal immigrants in the U.S., the concept of filial piety across a number of cultures, the queer subculture in modern Chine, and ethnic minorities in Chinese films.
